Leaders and managers workshops and webinars

Positive and sustainable workplace culture change starts at the top.

Openness, empathy, accountability and role modelling are key.

"Supporting your team with mental health can be daunting and I think it's important for line managers to understand the tools and resources available to them and to have the skills and confidence to do this."

The problem

People don’t leave their jobs, they leave poor management or a problematic work culture.

Poor managerial styles, skills, or a lack of confidence and experience have been shown to impact employee engagement, directly increasing stress-related absences and presenteeism.

Recent findings from the Institute of Health and Safety (IOSH) found that:

  • 57% of managers were offered no mental health and wellbeing training or support for managerial staff by their organisation.

  • Over 60% of managers felt they don’t get enough help to support the mental wellbeing of their staff.

  • Only 31% of managers felt sufficiently trained to recognise the signs of poor mental health in their teams.

Line managers often feel reluctant to start sensitive conversations about mental health for fear of making things worse, saying the wrong thing, or being unclear about poor performance issues.

The benefits

Leaders and managers have such a key role to play in preventing, protecting and promoting mental health and wellbeing awareness and management.

When working well, they can inspire positive team relationships and inclusivity, help build trust, and ensure effective communication and productivity.

Those with a strong understanding and focus on improving wellbeing tend to have better colleague and team relationships which leads to higher efficacy, better organisational results and happiness amongst employees.

Line managers in particular can be a key asset in creating healthier, happier and more productive workforces. They can help reduce anxiety, depression and stress, whilst also making sure their organisation complies with the legal and moral duty to ensure the health, safety and welfare of their employees. But this rarely happens unless they are equipped with the relevant skills, knowledge and confidence.

Well trained leaders and managers feel more able to successfully navigate uncomfortable conversations with their team. They are better equipped to support members who may be experiencing a wide range of life challenges - grief, divorce, or health or financial worries - and rather than inadvertently exacerbate mental wellbeing issues, they can use their knowledge and skills to find ways to help reduce impacts on performance, focus and energy.
